SMART Goals
SMART GOAL Achievements in 2007-2008
55% of all of our students will be proficient writers at their grade level by the end of this school year
Strategies – to have all staff working with common writing strategies
- Staff workshop – August 28th 2007 on the traits of writing – Led by Joanne Leblanc-Haley.
- Curriculum team designed common rubric on writing traits. Presented to staff at October 2007 staff meeting.
- Tall team designs and present workshop to staff to provide model on how teams can work together to share and assess student writing samples. Start of our Student Learning Meetings (SLM).
- All staff involved in district led initiative on writing and working as a team in assessing student writing November 2007.
- Applied for and awarded an Innovation Learning Fund Grant in partnership with University of New Brunswick to have teachers utilize the ECRIS model for writing.
- Curriculum team designed and administered common assessment in writing for all our students Dec. 2007.
- Results shared and teams incorporating strategies (ECRIS) during their SLM meetings Jan. – May 2008.
- End of year common assessment scheduled for May 15th to help measure our gains.
- Lead teachers (most of our Literacy – English and FI) involved in provincial and district initiatives focused on writing achievement.

Measurable – in 2006-2007 our data indicated weakness in writing (49% via Middle Level Literacy assessment).

- Our weak group is core boys – 56% were at below appropriate achievement in writing on the Middle Level Literacy assessment.
- Our Common Assessment data shared in January 2008 demonstrated 44% of all our students had writing achievement at grade level.
- Weak group is boys with 70% of core boys and 56% of Immersion Boys experiencing difficulty in writing at their grade level.

Attainable – all staff believe that 55% is reasonable achievement goal for 2007-2008.
Results Oriented and Time Bound - we expect to have 67% of all our students writing at grade level by the end of the school year 2008-2009 and 80% by the end of school year 2009-2010! |
For 2008-2009
SMART GOAL #1 (continuation)
If we are to experience 67% of all our students writing at their grade level by the end of 2008-2009, we will need to:
- Continue with the ECRIS model and traits of writing for all staff.
- Offer our students more opportunities to write.
- Find strategies for our weakest group --- core boys --- boys in general.
- One strategy may be the use of technology in order to increase the writing achievement of boys.
- Develop an Academic SPARK --- with a focus on literacy
- Focus on writing within other subject levels --- where can we incorporate deeper learning in all our subjects.
- Inform parents about their role in our writing SMART goal.

SMART GOAL # 2 (new)
PREAMBLE: Current data shows that our mathematics results on the District Grade 7 Mathematics and Middle Level Mathematics assessments indicate we are at same level of provincial and district achievement but we are below in the Operations strand. The Operations strand is a significant part of the mathematics curriculum and student non-success with Operations leads to difficulties in other mathematics strands. |

Possibly, higher success in the Operations strand could lead to better overall achievement results. Further our data on both assessments indicate that we have a lower number of students performing at strong!
In January and February 2008, the mathematics/science/technology curriculum team designed and administered a grade level common assessment focusing on operations (with a component of operations needed for science). The results indicate students achieved at 35% for the Operations strand! |
SMART GOAL # 2 (new)
85% of George Street Students will meet and/or exceed Strand B Outcomes at their grade level within 3 years.
Year 1 – 50% to 60% successful
Year 2 – 60% to 70% successful
Year 3 – 70% to 85% successful |
